INTERVIEW OF ADRIEN RUBIS
By Serge TREFEU (2016)
SERGE TREFEU: Hello Adrien, how are you?
ADRIEN RUBIS: I’m very well thank you
You grew up in what region of France?
I’m from Nice, but I’m left in the Montpellier region in the age of 10
How old are you ?
I’m 28 years old
At what age did you start boxing?
I started boxing at age 23
How you discovered this sport and what attracted to you towards the Thai boxing?
I knew this sport just name and reputation at first. Then, I committed in a journey to the world tour where I wanted to make the discovery of an artistic or sports activity appropriate to the country which I was going to visit. This is the way I began to make of Muay Thai…
You practised other sports before the boxing?
I practised many different sports, how a lot, I began with the judo, then of the soccer, the basketball, the rugby, the athletics, and I even fencing
You began Muay Thai directly in Thailand, in which year?
It was in 2011
In what camp you made your first trainings, how it’s passed your first sensations of training in this camp?
I began in a quite small camp, he was called the Thai Muay Thai gym, even if the camp closed some month later, I followed my professors in the camp Team Quest Thailand in Chiang Mai in the North, which had just opened, and I stayed with them during 3 years
You made your first fight in Thailand for this camp?
Yes, he took place during the new Buddhist year, Songkran, in the countryside, to Phayao (the North of the Thailand on the border of Laos)
You fought in the stadiums of provinces at the beginning?
Yes, in stadiums or also on boxing rings in the countryside in the middle of carnivals…
Then, you were able to fight on Bangkok, in Lumpinee and in Radja?
I had the opportunity to replace one of my companion for a fight in Lumpinee, I was able to win by KO at the second round. Two weeks later, I replaced again one of the boxers of my camp which could not be for the weight. This time it was for Raja, I gained a victory in the first round. The promotion Petchyindee, for which I had fought, proposed me then more and more fight…

How many victories by KO?

Your rangy style, aggressive on the boxing ring and control perfectly the techniques of knees reminded a little in legendary champion of the 90s Stephane Nikiema, you know this great champion?
I know of name only, I discovered the Thai boxing in Thailand, with Thai, then my references are it also. I looked at Kingsang Sor Sak Lamphun and Rambong in my early days, then guys as Langsuan, Samson Isan, Petchnamek, Lamnamoon and of course Diesel Noi (The Sky Piercing Knee Kicker)!
In what camp you perfected your techniques of knees?
We taught me at once the techniques of knees in my first camp, my professors saw that it was my strength and they focused my training on that
THE KNOCKS OF KNEES ARE ADRIEN RUBIS’S SPECIALITY
You are very tall for your weight, it’s not too difficult to stay constantly in 75 kg when doing 1m92?
Do you know the difference enter anabolic and catabolic?
The training which I receive here in Thailand corresponds more to the second category, consequently I’m very dry, in spite of my 1m92 I rarely exceed 80 kg. Then, 3 or 4 kg to be lost it’s not too difficult. In a time, I fought in 70kg, I had to lose 6-7 kg, one truth torture…
At present, you are in the camp of Master Samart Payakaroon, the Poptheeratham Gym in Bangkok, to train under the thumb of the biggest champion of Muay Thai of these last 30 years must be very rewarding?
I’m anyway motivated, but to be under the aegis of Khru Samart Payakaroon and to bear the name of his camp is undoubtedly a pride!

Let us say that it’s much better that what I was able to win in my early days. I did not even know that I would be paid when I accepted my first fight…
For what promoter you fights in Thailand?
I does not fight for a promoter in particular, if they want of me on his ” fight card ” and that they pay reasonably, then one can get on
You interests you in the Thai culture?
I have difficulty in escaping it!
What are the known Thai champions have you ever faced?
I faced Sirimongkol Sit Anuparp, Petchmankong Petchfocus, Chanachai Kaewsamrit (2 wins, 1 loss), Kanongsuk Chuwatana, Bernung Topkingboxing (1 win, 1 loss), Thongchai Sitsongpeenong, Wanchalerm Aoodonmuang (Victory)
What was your hardest fight so far?
My first one fights against Bernung during the King’s Birthday, me makes me count in the second round and I wages war to him all the rest of the fight. I lose and I’m destroyed, having given everything for the victory in this way and being given losing again (The second time when I fought for world champion’s belt WPMF). I put some time to put back me…
Your best memory of boxing?
First fight in Lumpinee, having dreamed about it, I’m there. Up on the boxing ring of the mythical ” Lumpinee Stadium ” where before me all these legendary boxers were able to fight. No pressure this day there, a big smile on the face when I pass over ropes, I’m simply happy to be there
You gained several titles in Thailand, you can speak to us about it?
I gained the belt of the North of the Thailand in 70 kg and the belt of Loi Kroh stadium to Chiangmaï in 2014, in April, 2015 I won world champion’s belt Interim WPMF in 168 lbs against Bernung Topkingboxing (Adrien was coached by two legends Samart and Diesel Noi) and in July, 2015 I took away the real title of champion of the World WPMF in 168 lbs by beating by KO in the third round Chanachai Keawsamrit!

You participated in the tournament Kayanghadao, little of fighter farang (Foreigner) made this tournament, how it it passed your fights in this important tournament in Thailand?
Yes it was in 2012, I ended fourth of the tournament, I was the only foreigner in the tournament. I had my first defeat of my career in this tournament, in the second match of group against Petchmangkon Petchfocus, I lost by decision in the face of him. It was my first defeat after 19 victories by KO. The tournament was high with in particular Sirimongkon, Petsangnuan, Tepsuthin, Sengjan, Yodkunpon…
It’s the tournament which was over six months. I faced at first Yodkunpon whom I beat by KO (Yodkunpon abandoned the tournament after his defeat against me and he was replaced by Sengjan), then I met Petchmangkon against whom I lost in points. Then, I beat Sengjan by KO. I arrived in semi-final and I met Sirimongkon who beat me in points. I found Petchmangkon who had lost against Tepsuthin in the other semi-final. Petchmangkon again beat me but by KO and he gained the third place of the tournament. Tepsuthin takes away the second place and it’s Sirimongkon Sitanuparp who gained the tournament!

To compete for a belt of a big stadium of Bangkok, Lumpinee, Radja or stadium of Omnoi, is what that is a dream which you would like to achieve?
I would like, it’s these belts there that feed our dreams. But I’m afraid that it’s not possible, I’m too heavy, for part maybe the belt in 160 lbs of the stadium of Raja. If one day we propose it to me I would think…
What are for you the strongest champions in your current category?
Who are them? Good question, none is impregnable, that is for sure
On June 11th, you are going to come in France to fight in the event Warriors Night 5 which will take place in Paris, it’s the first time that you will fight in France?
Yes, first time on my ground and against a Thai, we are going to invert the roles that will be funny

Yes normally he will be for me coached there

I know him of name and reputation but I knew him at first as actor before knowing the boxer
For this event, you go faced the Thai Panom Top King Boxing (Thailand Champion, World champion WPMF), what is what you know your opponent and what think of you of him?
I know him and he knows me, it’s an experimented boxer, I will have to push aside him to impose my rhythm, he will not follow…
You are going to fight with elbow pads, you think that it’s not going to hamper you who is used to fight with the unprotected elbows?
We shall see good, but a thing is sure, elbow pad gone back up or not, it will not prevent my elbows from leaving!
